In November, the American Center has teamed up with the EducationUSA Advising Center to celebrate International Education Week (IEW) from November 14-18.  Look for programs marked “IEW” and join us to learn about international exchange programs and education in the U.S.!

All of the below events are open for the public. We would like you to plan carefully before registering with us so that we have enough seats for participants. If you register for our events but change your plan, kindly notify us by email to irchanoi@gmail.com. Please register for event(s) you want to attend.

American Documentary Showcase: MAKE BELIEVE

Time: Tuesday, November 1, 2:00 – 4:00

A coming-of-age journey set in the quirky subculture of magic, Make Believe follows six of the world's best young magicians as they pursue the title of Teen World Champion magician and lead us on their personal journeys of transformation through stage magic. Make Believe was the winner of Best Documentary prize in Los Angeles Film Festival 2010 and Audience Award of Austin Film Festival 2010.  Join us to view this fascinating documentary and hear more about it from the filmmaker Steven Klein, who will also treat us to a few magic tricks!

IEW: Open the Door to U.S. Government Sponsored Youth Exchange Programs

Alumni of U.S. Government sponsored youth exchange programs will share their tips for preparing a winning application, how to write an effective CV and compelling personal statement. Panel includes alumni from the Study of the United States Institutes (SUSI), Global Undergraduate Exchange (UGRAD) and Intensive English programs.

About the movie
Anyone who's ever been in a classroom will be touched by this moving, mostly-true story of famed East L.A. math teacher Jaime Escalante (Edward James Olmos), who finds himself in a classroom of rebellious remedial-math students. He stuns fellow faculty members with his plans to teach AP Calculus, and even more when the mostly Hispanic teens (including Lou Diamond Phillips as Angel Guzman) overcome the odds and eventually go the distance.
