United States Partners with Vietnam On Data Privacy Workshop

November 9, 2007

United States Ambassador to Vietnam Michael Michalak will open a seminar on Tuesday November 13 on the critical issue of data privacy.  The workshop, hosted by Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade entitled, "Data Privacy in Connection with Development of E-Commerce in APEC: The Experiences of the United States," will feature speakers from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Federal Trade Commissioner.

U.S. Government participants will share experiences and best practices in protecting data privacy in the United States as part of ongoing cooperation to implement the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Privacy Framework adopted by APEC Ministers in 2004.   In addition, representatives from the U.S. and Vietnamese private sectors will discuss their perspectives on how best to protect private data, particularly in the context of cross-border data flows.

Tuesday's seminar is part of U.S.-Vietnam cooperation under the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Data Privacy Pathfinder framework, and is an outcome of the Vietnam-U.S. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Commercial Dialogue, held in Hanoi this past September.
