United States Department of Defense to Support Vietnam’s Work for AIDS Relief

Hanoi – July 28, 2008

Officials from the U.S. Department of Defense working through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) will visit and work with Vietnamese Ministry of Defense (MoD) partners to review programs aimed at combating HIV/AIDS in Vietnam.

The delegation and its MoD partners will be reviewing HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment activities in joint U.S. – Vietnamese programs. The U.S. delegation also hopes to gain a comprehensive understanding on program planning, execution, challenges and achievements in combating HIV/AIDS.

PEPFAR projects in Vietnam focus on prevention, care and treatment for both military and civilian populations. The budget for PEPFAR programs managed by the U.S. Department of Defense in 2008 is $5.3 million, part of the total PEPFAR budget of $88 million for Vietnam for Fiscal Year 2008.
