American-Funded Rehabilitation Center Opens in Danang

June 30, 2008

A new clinic serving the needs of Central Vietnam's disabled population was inaugurated in Danang on June 28 as the private Binh Danh Hospital unveiled its new two story wing. The clinic, funded with a $400,000 grant from The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by the U.S. NGO Vietnam Assistance for the Handicapped, aims to help thousands of Danang's residents who suffer from mobility impairments.

Specialized facilities

Many of Danang's men, women and children suffer from mobility and other problems - often caused by landmines or war injuries - that can be treated and, in some cases, cured if quality care is made available. The clinic is expected to help disabled persons in Danang province and improve services through clinics to the rural disabled living in the area. It will serve as a demonstration and training center for the province and for Vietnam and will provide clinical, hands-on training for medical professionals in Central Vietnam.

Helping Vietnam's Disabled

To date, the United States Government has contributed over $43 million in assistance to people with disabilities, including programs which help children with disabilities remain in school, providing alternative livelihoods and specialized medical care to people with disabilities, making roads, transport and buildings more accessible to Vietnam's disabled and ensuring that the millions of Vietnamese living with disabilities are given equal opportunities to participate in the Vietnam's social, cultural and economic life.
