U.S. Embassy Presents Export Licensing Technology to Ministry of Science & Technology

June 28, 2007

The United States Embassy presented a specialized computer system known as "Tracker," to the Ministry of Science & Technology, Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety & Control (VARANSAC) on June 27.  Valued at US$40,000, the system is designed for use by export control officials involved in the control of military goods and strategic commodities.

The “Tracker” system will enable the Ministry to process license applications for the export, import and transshipment of strategic commodities more efficiently.

Through the use of this system, export control agencies will be able to implement internationally-accepted best practices for strategic licensing, such as interagency consensus building, transparency, and data security.

As part of an ongoing program of export control assistance, the United States Government will also provide the full range of computer and networking equipment necessary to operate the software, as well as training for system administrators and licensing officers and at least two years of follow-on system maintenance.

This equipment was provided under the auspices of the U.S. Government’s Export Control and Border Security program, which helps countries strengthen national trade control systems consistent with international standards.  The United States Government welcomes the Vietnamese Government’s cooperation and support in these efforts to improve their ability to prevent the transfer of weapons of mass destruction and missile related items.  Through this important partnership, the United States and Vietnam are helping ensure a safer world.
