Press Release
Statement on the Death of Former Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet
By Michael W. Michalak
Ambassador of the United States to Vietnam
June 14, 2008
It is with sadness that we mark the death of former Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet, and I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, as well as to the Government and the people of Vietnam, on his passing.
Vietnam has lost a visionary leader who inspired his fellow citizens to achieve great things. As Prime Minister from 1991 to 1997, the Government undertook reforms that over time helped lift many millions of Vietnamese out of poverty.
Mr. Kiet also played an instrumental, leading role in helping normalize relations between the United States and Vietnam in 1995. We will always remain grateful to him for his efforts which have proved so beneficial to both our countries. We highly value our relationship with Vietnam and, in testament to Mr. Kiet’s legacy, look forward to further broadening and deepening our ties in the coming years.
