In a formal ceremony, Minister of Health, Tran Thi Trung Chien, and U.S. Ambassador Michael W. Marine signed the Action Plan establishing a bilateral partnership between the United States and Vietnam to prevent new HIV infections and provide care and treatment for people living with AIDS. This partnership is supported by President Bush’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Under PEPFAR, the Inter-ministerial Coordination committee chaired by Ministry of Health and the US PEPFAR Team collaborate with many partners from many sectors in Vietnam to develop and implement prevention programs targeting populations most at risk for infection, and establish many services for people affected by HIV/AIDS. By the end of the project in 2008, the program will treat 22,000 people with HIV infections with antiretroviral therapies and care for including ART to 22,000 HIV infected people and care programs to 110,000 people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
