Managing Change and Inovation

Time: 14:00-16:00, Friday, December 8, 2006
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

Subjects of this event:

     1.  The five indispensable conditions that exist in every innovative society, and what is the environment (or environments) in which innovation thrives.   It goes without saying that "innovation" and "invention" are closely related, and I will describe how even societies that have not been innovative (inventive) become so;

     2.  The twelve attributes of innovation, which include such characteristics as how certain innovations lead to others, in other words both synergies and also what are are serendipities;

     3.  Why in the modern markets around the world (including Southeast Asia and Vietnam), there are certain divergences and convergences also operating, as well as changes in competitive advantages and disadvantages;

     4.  Practical applications of the various environments, trends, and conditions and pre-conditions as they apply to Vietnam in particular.

     5.  Why, and how, Vietnam has the characteristics for an innovation-driven economy.

Texas Culture

Time: 10:00-11:30, Friday, December 15, 2006
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

The United States has been a nation of immigrants from the beginning.  Texas, which many people think of as mostly cowboys and Indians, has benefited from this rich heritage.  The customs that the many cultures of the world who settled in Texas, both in the past and recently, brought with them make for a fascinating look at Texas today.

Hoop Dreams (1994)

Time: 14:00-16:30, Friday, December 22, 2006
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

This documentary follows two inner-city Chicago residents, Arthur Agee and William Gates, as they follow their dreams of becoming basketball superstars. Beginning at the start of their high school years, and ending almost 5 years later, as they start college, we watch the boys mature into men, still retaining their "Hoop Dreams". Both are recruited into the same elite high school as their idol, former Detroit Piston superstar Isaiah Thomas. Only one survives the first year; the other must return to a high school closer to his home. Along the way, there is much tragedy, some joy, a great wealth of information about inner city life, and the suspense of not knowing what will occur next. This is not a "by-the-numbers" film.

It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

Time: 14:00-16:30, Friday, December 29, 2006
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

George Bailey is a small-town man whose life seems so desperate he contemplates suicide. He had always wanted to leave Bedford Falls to see the world, but circumstances and his own good heart have led him to stay. He sacrficed his education for his brother's, kept the family-run savings and loan afloat, protected the town from the avarice of the greedy banker Mr. Potter, and married his childhood sweetheart. As he prepares to jump from a bridge, his guardian angel intercedes, showing him what life would have become for the residents of Bedford Falls is he had never lived.
