Film Show: Real Women Have Curves

This is the story of Ana, a first generation Mexican-American teenager on the verge of becoming a woman. She lives in the predominately Latino community of East Los Angeles. Freshly graduated from high school, Ana receives a full scholarship to Columbia University. Her very traditional, old-world parents feel that now is the time for Ana to help provide for the family, not the time for college. Torn between her mainstream ambitions and her cultural heritage she agrees to work with her mother at her sister's downtown LA sewing factory. Over the summer she learns to admire the hardworking team of women who teach her solidarity and teamwork. Still at odds with what her mother expects of her, Ana realizes that leaving home to continue her education is essential to finding her place proudly in the world as an American and Chicana.

But in the end, is it even worth it? Come and pick up reading materials at the reception desk.

Performance and Discussion Program on American Music

You are invited to join our discussion program on American Music and enjoy performance from two New York Philharmonic orchestra members. Founded in 1842, the New York Philharmonic is the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States and one of the oldest in the world. Since its inception, the Philharmonic has played a leading role in American musical life, championing the new music of its time and commissioning or premiering many important works. Please register to join us, we can only host up to 30 persons this time, so first come, first served.

Film Show: Cheaper by the Dozen

In this remake of the 1950 film, the Baker brood moves to Chicago after patriarch Tom (Steve Martin) gets a job coaching football at Northwestern University. His writer wife, Mary (Bonnie Hunt), and the couple's twelve children seem to adjust well, until work demands cause the parents to be home more sparingly, leaving the kids frustrated, bored and increasingly mischievous. Also stars Hilary Duff and Tom Welling (of television's "Smallville").

This simple training session will equip you with the basics of working style in American academic and business environment, from how student should behave in class to basic rules at work, from a proper handshaking to how to deal with email properly. Participants will have a chance to discuss some tips on do’s and don’ts for the American working environment.

The Institute of International Education – IIE is going to hold a special meeting for students who show great interest in studying abroad, particularly in the USA. Speaker: Professor A. James McAdams, William M. Scholl Professor of International Affairs and Director of the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

Come join Professor McAdams for an engaging discussion on "Obama's World:  Before and After the Nobel Prize."
Participants will have a chance to discuss the following issues:

U.S. University Application Orientation

Time: 9:30-11:00, October 24, 2009
Venue: 1st Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

The Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF) is a U.S. independent Federal Government agency, which began operations in 2003. The VEF mission is to build the bilateral relationship between the United States and Vietnam through educational exchange activities in science, engineering, mathematics, technology, and medicine, including public health. VEF focuses on fellowships and grants for Vietnamese and U.S. nationals and on capacity building projects in Vietnam. In this session, On Saturday, October 24, 2009, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., VEF will hold an orientation for its nominees for the 2010 VEF Fellowship on how to apply to U.S. universities. The University Application Orientation (UAO) is a part of the VEF application and selection process. The UAO will provide helpful advice (hints/tips/guidelines) on how to prepare an outstanding application package to submit to U.S. universities, including how to write a good statement of purpose (SOP). VEF welcomes others, who are interested in learning about applying to U.S. universities, to attend.

Halloween Party

A costume party open to the public!  Come join us for education and fun! Come dressed as your favorite character, superhero, or scary monster and experience an American tradition!
Events include a brief discussion on the history and traditions of Halloween, face painting, games, quizzes, and a costume contest. Light refreshments will be served.


Pronunciation Workshop: The Sounds of American English

Time: 14:00-16:00, October 26, 2009
Venue: 1st Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi
Speaker: Ms. Helen Huntley, Senior English Language Fellow 

In this workshop, the consonants and vowels that typically cause difficulties for Vietnamese speakers will be reviewed and communicative activities to address these problem areas will be explored and practiced. Participants will also learn about sounds (Aaah!, Huh? etc.) that have communicative meaning in English and practice using them to respond to common situations. Participants will be encouraged to self-monitor their own speech to perceive patterns of strengths and weaknesses in their own pronunciation of English. -- (This is a repeat of program on September 11, 2009 so people who already attended last session SHOULD NOT register this time. Film Show: Twilight

Isabella Swan moves to gloomy Forks to live with her father. As she starts her junior year in high school she becomes fascinated by Edward Cullen who holds a dark secret which is only known by his family. Edward falls in love with Bella as well but knows the further they progress in their relationship the more he is putting Bella and those close to her at risk. Edward warns Bella that she should leave him but she refuses to listen and to understand why he is saying this. Bella learns his secret. He is a vampire, however she is not afraid of his blood-thirsty needs and the fact he could kill her at any moment. Bella is afraid of losing him, the love of her life. The thrill begins when a new vampire finds it a challenge to hunt Bella down for her irresistible blood. The game is on and James will not stop until she is killed.
