Antwone Fisher

“This is a film that can change people’s lives”

Time: 14:00-16:30, October 19, 2007
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

Denzel Washington makes his triumphant directorial debut and Derk Luke shines in his first big-screen role in this gripping “story of survival and triumph!” (Clay Smith, Access Hollywood). Inspired by the true life experiences of its title character, Antwone Fisher tells the compelling story of a troubled sailor (Luke) who is ordered to see a naval psychiatrist (Washington) about his volatile temper. Little does he know that his first step into the doctor’s office will lead him on a remarkable emotional journey to confront his painful past and connect with the family he never knew.

Akeelah and the Bee

Time: 14:00-16:30, October 26, 2007
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

Akeelah and the Bee tells the story of Akeelah Anderson, an eleven-year-old girl from south Los Angeles, California with a talent for spelling.  Despite her mother’s objections, Akeelah participates in local and regional spelling bees.  With the help of her tutor, Dr. Larabee; her principal, Mr. Welch; the residents of her neighborhood; and the members of her family, Akeelah wins an opportunity to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Successful Presentation Strategies

Time: 14:00-16:30, October 29, 2007
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

Many teachers include student oral presentations in the curriculum as a way to assess speaking and other skills through direct observation of a student’s performance. However, student presentations tend to be relatively ineffective as both a class activity and as a means of assessment because of inadequate advance preparation on the part of both teachers and students and because teachers often fail to provide meaningful feedback. This workshop will examine the role of the teacher, the presenter, and the audience through an exploration of the characteristics of successful presentations, appropriate methods of organization, and effective linguistic cues. With careful planning and analysis, the student presentation can be transformed into a useful and valid measure of language proficiency.
