Women's Role in US

Time: 14:00-16:00, Mar. 7, 2008
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

Many women accepted their unequal status without question, but there were also others who took an active interest in political life and who became increasingly dissatisfied with their continued exclusion. The new "enlightened" ideas of liberty, equality, and democracy that were being discussed by men found a strong echo among intelligent women, and when the American colonies prepared for their secession from the English crown, they dreamed of their own sort of liberation, too. This presentation will go over the timeline of the Women's Movement in America from the 1800's to present day and also discuss about the role and contribution of women in our modern society.

Votes for Women

Time: 14:00-16:00, Mar. 14, 2008
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

Taking a fresh and contemporary look at a pivotal event in American history, IRON JAWED ANGELS tells the true story of how defiant and brilliant young activists Alice Paul, played by Hilary Swank (Boys Don't Cry, Insomnia), and Lucy Burns, played by Frances O'Connor (Wintalkers, Artificial Intelligence:Al), took the women's suffrage movement by storm, putting their lives at risk to help American women win the right to vote.

2008 U.S. Presidential Election

Time: 10:00-11:30, Mar. 14, 2008
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

How does one analyze a U.S. presidential election?  The American electoral system is very complex, and even mysterious. It is possible, however, to make sense of it with some basic tools of electoral sociology, political analysis, and communication theory. Nevertheless, the current presidential campaign is especially fascinating because it has been so unpredictable! In the history of recent campaigns this one is particularly interesting to Americans and the rest of the world. How is this election different,  and how is it democratic politics as usual?

The Joy Luck Club

Time: 09:00-11:00, Mar. 20, 2008
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

"The Joy Luck Club" presents itself as a serious look into the lives of these women, and certainly it has the appearance of profundity. True, there are too few films focusing on women's lives, and almost none about Asian Americans, and, yes, "The Joy Luck Club" helps to correct that imbalance. But the conclusions of the film -- its perceptions about the real lives of people -- are perhaps less profound than the filmmakers would have us believe. It's ravishing to look it, a truly gorgeous object. But it is not deep. (By Hal Hinson, Washington Post Staff Writer)

2008 U.S. Presidential Election

Time: 14:00-16:00, Mar. 21, 2008
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

The U.S. presidential election is one of the world's most closely watched political contests, and the 2008 election is turning out to be one of the most exciting in years. If you've ever wondered what a caucus or an Electoral College is, or why some states are "red" and others "blue," this look at the U.S. election, the political parties, and their candidates will help demystify the presidential selection process.

Funding for Studying in the USA

Time: 15:00-16:15, Mar. 31, 2008
Venue: 3rd Floor, Rose Garden Tower, 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi

The U.S. higher education system is well-known for its exceptional quality, diversity and flexibilty.  However, its affordability is less known to foreign students, especially those from poorer backgrounds.  This presentation will provide students at both graduate and undergraduate levels insights into financing options for studying in the U.S. and ways to secure the most generous funding.

This event is jointly-organized by the Public Affairs Section (PAS) and Institute of International Education (IIE).
