Economic Section

Who We Are

The Economic Section advises the Ambassador and the U.S. Government on all economic policy issues and the U.S.-Vietnam economic relationship.  The Section monitors and analyzes Vietnam's investment and trade policies, macroeconomic trends as well as developments in major economic sectors, and how these events affect United States interests.  The Economic Section has primary responsibility for promoting these interests with the Government of Vietnam, including implementation of Vietnam's commitments under the World Trade Organization (WTO), the U.S.-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) and other international and bilateral agreements.  Finally, the Economic Section also oversees U.S. policy in Vietnam on assistance and works closely with the U.S. Agency for International Development on all its programs in Vietnam, both in terms of humanitarian assistance as well as economic development, trade and investment reform technical assistance.

The Economic Section of the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi is headed by a Counselor for Economic Affairs, a Deputy Chief of Section, four Economic Officers, an Economic Support Unit staffed by four Vietnamese Economic Assistants, and an Office Management Specialist.
