Message from the Ambassador

U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam David B. Shear

U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam David B. Shear

Thank you for visiting the website of the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi. Promoting U.S. economic interests and creating opportunities for American businesses in Vietnam is among my top priorities as Ambassador.

Since our two countries normalized relations in 1995 we have made impressive advances in our bilateral relationship, which is based on mutual respect, growing friendship, and a sincere desire for constructive relations. Many of these advances have come in the area of trade.

The United States and Vietnam continue to work together in multilateral fora like ASEAN, APEC, the WTO, and through our Trade and Investment Framework Agreement, to create a trade framework that is open, free, transparent, and fair.

One of the most import issues the United States, Vietnam, and 10 other countries are working on is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Free Trade Agreement.  This ambitious agreement would boost economic growth by reducing tariff rates and trade barriers between 12 countries which comprise 40% of global trade.

President Obama captured TPP’s importance when he said: “In a larger sense, the TPP has the potential to be a model not only for the Asia Pacific but for future trade agreements. It addresses a whole range of issues not covered by past agreements, including market regulations and how we can make them more compatible, creating opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses in the growing global marketplace. It will include high standards to protect workers’ rights and the environment.”

My Embassy is here to support you in your efforts to further advance the U.S.-Vietnam trade relationship.
