Chargé d’Affaires Claire A. Pierangelo
Chargé d’Affaires Claire Pierangelo arrived in Hanoi in July 2011 as Deputy Chief of Mission. Ms. Pierangelo previously served in the Office of Senior Level Career Development and Assignments, as Director of the Office of Central European Affairs and as Deputy Director in the Office of European Union and Regional Affairs. In her last overseas position, Ms. Pierangelo served as Principal Officer/Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya, Indonesia, where she was responsible for one of the largest Consular Districts in the world, including Consular Agency Bali. She also served as Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam, where she was responsible for the opening of economic relations, negotiation and implementation of several major trade and investment agreements, including the U.S.-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement, agreements on textiles, aviation, foreign assistance, labor, and WTO accession.
Other assignments include Director for Bilateral Investment at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), Italy Desk Officer, Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs’ Japan Trade office, foreign policy advisor to the Chevron Overseas Petroleum Corporation, Office of EU and OECD affairs, and overseas tours in Italy, England, and Haiti. She speaks Italian, French, Vietnamese, and Indonesian.
Ms. Pierangelo received a Masters of Science in National Security Studies from the National Defense University, a Masters in European Studies and International Economics from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and a BA in History from the University of California at Santa Cruz. She is the recipient of several Superior Honor and Meritorious Honor Awards from the Department of State.
